I'm originally from HK but my family moved when I was little right before SARS. I grew up in the US (California) and thankfully never had to take DSE. I still grew eating lots of 茶餐廳 and Cantonese style food (I even drank/drink Vitasoy). Still follow local news via RTHK and Hong Kong Free Press and sometimes Stand News via google translate.
I only have been back to HK 2 times since my family left but got to work an internship during the 2019 Summer. I didn't go to the protests but was here during 6/16, 7/1, 7/21. I remember seeing the flowers after the suicide on Harcourt Road, the various Lennon walls, and LegCo post 7/1. It was amazing to see the city come together to fight for its survival and the current situation is really sad to see. My time in HK actually inspired me to become a teacher as I saw how young people are the future of the society and the role education plays in that.
Some American did a post a while back about asking questions. I figure it would be a good time to do another one especially since the US elections just happened and that maybe I can offer a different perspective being originally from HK. Ask me anything about the US: culture, food, politics, history, economics, education, etc. You can also ask me my thoughts about HK or share your thoughts about the US or HK.
Please type in English as the only characters I can read are the ones on Mahjong tiles. If verification of my identity is needed please let me know and I'll upload something.

First off, a lot of Americans still like Trump. 47.3% of Americans voted for Trump in 2020.
I think more people dislike Trump rather than like Biden. Even in the democratic primary, people voted for Biden to stop Bernie Sanders as he was doing poorly until all the candidates dropped out.

According to ur impression/observation, how general American think about HK's situation comparing to BLM ? or do they compare them at all ?
How do you think Trump / Biden will take HK matters ? What kind of approaches/actions you deem is more likely to happen after or right before the white house swipe.
Will you take the current situation of HK as an example for ur future students for inspiring them to think.
How HK is more likely to end up with according ur own prediction?

I think communism is probably not achievable though I do think some elements of socialism can be possible. Communism won't happen because people are selfish though it would be great if we as people could do that. In Hong Kong you have the Hospital Authority which provides low cost health care and is run by the government.
I think economies should be more socialist oriented and Hong Kong needs to expand public housing and put more money into the public healthcare system (and the US needs to get a public healthcare system). Note that China is not communist it is authoritarian state-capitalist. If China hated capitalism it would of dismantled HK's economic system by now.

I can explain why many Americans dislike Trump. I live in CA so I can tell you all about that. Trump has used a lot of racially charged rhetoric such as "Build the Wall," calling Mexicans rapists, or even calling Coronavirus kung-flu. He has not been vocal about opposing white supremacy and his failure to do police reform and address BLM grievances. People also see his economic policies as give outs to the rich and harmful for the poor (see the 2017 tax cuts). {People see him as authoritarian and doesn't care about democracy. They see him weaponizing the Department of Justice (similar to how people see Theresa Cheng in HK) and other institutions in the US to protect himself. Lastly, US leads the world in coronavirus cases and deaths so people see his coronavirus strategy as the reason it is not working.

It's up to you all to decide what you think about these things, I am just telling you what Americans would say.

There is not much comparison between BLM and the situation in HK in the American society. I being a Hker and American do so. I see the parallel of police brutality killing the people they are suppose to protect. Police in the US also tried to suppress protests across the US using tear gas, rubber bullets, and pepper spray like in HK.
I study history at university so looking at US history and the constitutional process there is little chance Trump wins at this point (we would need a repeat of 1876). I think what Biden will do is try to work with US allies globally to restrain China. He may not confront China as directly but I think he will try to get the UK, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, etc working together. The sanctions on Carrie Lam and other HK officials will remain. I think Biden also will be critical of China on environmental issues which will be something Trump did not focus on.
Yes, when I start teaching (I'm still in university right now) I will teach my students about HK and use it as a way to show them how students can change the future. I'll also show them the pictures of students studying at protests to make sure they do not neglect their studies too haha.
I am not that optimistic about HK's situation. I think with NSL and the recent DQs in LegCo CCP will only continue to tighten control of HK. I hope I am wrong and I do feel terrible being in the US and watching what's going on in HK. My friends and maybe you all think I am crazy but if I can get a job at an intl school or local EMI school I actually would want to move back to HK.

Why do people prefer Biden over Sanders? Is he too economically left for most Americans?

Not really. My parents gave me a very Western name so I never got made fun over that. I grew up in a very Asian part of CA too so most of my friends growing up are all ethnically Chinese, so that was never an issue. English is my native language as my parents stopped teaching me Cantonese once I left HK (though Cantonese is my first language actually) so I never had an accent.
A lot of my classes starting in form 4 (10th grade) were basically all Asians. My form 5 math class had 1 white person out of a group of 35 students.

The hatred towards Trump is unreal. Surely he is comical and not very president like (in a traditional sense) but I never find him to be as evil as the media paints him to be. They make him sound like he is worse than a murderer or a rapist, yet they are completely oblivious about Biden being a pedophile. There's no way to reason with them. I asked in a non-political Facebook group why people hate Trump so much. I ended up getting banned and receiving a couple of death threats. My stupid ass can't fathom why they have so much hate towards Trump, so much so that they can't even see what they've become. I believe the hatred they spew will one day catch up with them.
Is it not weird that a large percentage of "Americans" online does not allow a second opinion? What's so wrong with the President being himself? I mean he's been like that since day 1. His ego didn't grow overnight just because he got elected lol What do u think? Are Americans losing their values because they hate someone? Do Americans actually want a politician like Biden who says things he doesn't mean but appear 'proper' and more politically correct?

I don't have a partner or significant other yet. I myself am ethnically Chinese. If I were to choose which ethnicity I'd prefer I would say Chinese though in the US that refers to anyone ethnically Chinese not from Mainland China. Ideally either a HKer or an ABC (American Born Chinese).

I wouldn't say that is true. I personally think that many of these criticisms are valid. I respect people to have their own opinions and I have friends who love trump and friends that do not like him.
This doesn't mean everything Trump did is bad. Like I really like that Trump did criminal justice reform something that has been needed for a long time.
I do not like Biden much at all and am skeptical if he will improve things by that much, he just won't make them worse. I don't think the US will help HK in a way that will actually make a difference regardless of Biden or Trump.

thx ur sharing.
But note that pls don't feel bad as you are not in HK, there is noting more we can do than suffering together at this moment. I am glad you are out there safe in America as an American and have self-recognition as HKer as well , that means the spirit of HK will never die even we have to spread all over the world.
If I were you , I won't try to move back ,at least not at this moment. I believe when time comes, it will need efforts from all HKer over the world ,together and for one goal. Before that just keep safe and bear these in mind. Take Iseral as an example , they may not justify their actions toward Palestinian but their endurance and the gravity of own identity really inspiring. Not even Nazi's genocide could rip them apart.

Yea I know which is why I think it is important to have these conversations. I know people who love Trump and I understand why they do. I used to be a republican for a long time so I understand the appeal for Trump and more liberal people have made 0 attempts to reach out to Trump supporters and understand their concerns. Liberals have neglected the Midwest and people are suffering there- Trump spoke to them in a way Democrats did not.
