I don't know the answer, but I would suggest that you should take up British Citizenship before leaving UK for a long period of time. This will make reentering the UK a lot easier. Another added advantage is that once you got British Citizenship, you can pass it on to your child born outside of the UK. I don't think you can pass on your 'settled' status to your child born outside of the UK.
