Petition Letter
by a Group of British Citizens and British Nationals (Overseas) in Hong Kong
Your Excellency,
We are writing urgently to express our deepest concern for a currently proposed change to the Fugitives Offenders Ordinance (often referred to as Extradition Law) put forward by the government of Hong Kong.
On 9th Jun 2019, a million of Hong Kong people has marched a day and night onto the streets to protest against the introduction of this proposed extradition law. Hong Kong currently has extradition agreements with 18 countries, including the UK and four other EU member states. The proposed amendment will extend extradition coverage to laws of communist mainland China. This bill, if passed, will pose an imminent threat to civil rights of and the very safety to British nationals with connections to or living in Hong Kong.
Although the Chief Executive Carrie Lam has given assurances that there will be room for further discussions and there will be safeguards in place, we do not trust the legal system in China nor do we trust that the government of Hong Kong will stand up against Chinese authorities.
We ask, if this bill passed the Legislative Council, the UK government consider:
• to take further action to oppose the introduction of this extradition law for Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy and freedoms enshrined in the Sino-British Joint Declaration;
• to examine the possibility for BN(O) passport holders to reside in the UK and/or the Commonwealth member states.
Yours Sincerely,
A Group of British Citizens and British Nationals (Overseas) in Hong Kong

Re: Concern of the Own Safety of British Citizens and British Nationals (Overseas) in Hong Kong
Dear Honorable Ambassador,
I am writing concerning our own safety regarding the recent plan to allow extradition to Mainland Chine proposed by HKSAR government.
The controversial extradition law amendment plans will seriously damage the high degree of autonomy of Hong Kong and most importantly, the judicial independence constitutionally entrenched in Basic Law, as it is believed that when the extradition law is enforced, it can be a strong weapon by the Beijing government to eliminate the voices against their regime by allowing suspected criminals to be sent to mainland China to face trail, and it therefore inevitably threatens the freedom and even own safety of Hong Kong citizens, including the British citizens and British Nationals living in the city.
We would like to express our fierce opposition to this proposal. Hundreds of thousands of people who took part in the march against the law on 6/9/2019, however, do not get a proper response from the government as the amendment will not be delayed or scraped despite of the biggest demonstration since the 1997 handover. We believe Hong Kong is our home and have no intention to leave. Obviously the amendment has no way to close the “legal loophole” as the government has claimed, but violate the Sino-British Joint Declaration and diminish Hong Kong’s jurisdiction under “one country, two systems”. Most importantly, it poses a huge threat to the own safety of Hong Kong residents, where it is considered that the judicial systems in mainland China can be manipulated for political reasons and residents sent will not receive fair trial.
