Kyle Lau Ka-kiu endured a controversial welcome to international football, but having had his selection for Hong Kong queried by some, he intends to make his big break count, starting against South Korea on Friday.
“I didn’t think about [the controversy] too much, I just wanted to give it my all,” the 23-year-old said as he looked forward to Friday’s clash with the host Koreans.
“I’m really grateful for the trust the coach puts in me, and I want to pay him back.
“It’s important for me to be at this tournament; these are some of the top teams in the world, so it’s a valuable experience to see their level and test myself against them.”
Now, with his degree in economics and mathematics completed, and plans to become a financial analyst on ice, Lau wants a starting role.
“Hopefully I’ll score my first official Hong Kong goal in this tournament,” he said, having netted in this year’s Guangdong-Hong Kong Cup.
“I made a mistake for [Japan’s] last goal, so I have to step it up if I want to get a start.”
