While a Hong Kong excursion has been mentioned several times for Mr Brightside, this time it’s a focus and firmly on the agenda for the champion galloper.
Co-trainer Ben Hayes reaffirmed the Hong Kong Mile at Sha Tin on April 27 is planned to be the final run of Mr Brightside's 2025 autumn campaign, which will be his first overseas run.
“We’ve got Hong Kong in our plans; it’s the right time as he’s done everything he can in Australia,” Hayes said.
He said Mr Brightside will have three runs in Melbourne, which will be the Orr Stakes (February 8), the Futurity Stakes (February 22) both at Caulfield over 1400m and then the All-Star Mile at Flemington on March 8.
“He’s got those three definite runs here and then we might consider going to Sydney for the George Ryder or we go straight to Hong Kong after his three runs here,” he said.
Hayes said they had considered Hong Kong trips in the past, but this time it had been factored into the campaign for the seven-year-old gelding.
“There’s not much more he can do here. He’s won a lot of Group 1s and it’s a great time of the year to go to Hong Kong,” Hayes said.
The eight-time G1 winner, who has netted $16 million in prizemoney, will be trying to make it two successive Orr Stakes wins.
Mr Brightside has had 41 starts and has won 18 races. At his last start he was successful in the VRC Champions Mile on November 9.
Hayes was pleased with Mr Brightside’s third on Friday in an 800m trial at Werribee when ridden by Jaylah Kennedy.
“I’m very happy with him. He trialled really well. He’s spot on to go for a second jumpout on January 28 at Geelong,” he said.
