Pastors and Preachers Condemn Violent Crackdown on Peaceful Protesters

Dozens of pastors and preachers hold a press conference as they recount what they had experienced from June 11 to June 12, strongly condemning the violent crackdown by the Hong Kong Police force on peaceful protesters. A few of the pastors sob as they tell their stories, one of them claims that when he requested the police officers to give warnings before pushing or dispersing the protesters, a police officer responded provocatively, "Call upon your Jesus to show himself before me!"

Rev. Yuen Tin-yau points out that some leaders of the Christian church has invited Carrie Lam, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, to have a meeting but Lam did not reply to the invitation. Yuen thinks that the Chief Executive may not provide a positive response to their request. He also says that many of the protestors who seek help from the Methodist Church of Hong Kong are not only suffering from physical injury but also emotional trauma. He criticizes that the Government has never reflected on the current situation of Hong Kong and he thinks that Carrie Lam should step down from her office of being the Chief Executive of Hong Kong.

These Christian preachers and priests have been singing carols with the protestors there for more than 8 hours during the protest. Rev. Wong Siu-yung, a priest participating in the press conference, points out that after the end of the prayer meeting at night on 11 June, some priests voluntarily stayed with the protestors and sing carols continuously until the start of another prayer meeting at 7 a.m. on 12 June. However, at 11 a.m., some police officers claimed that they have received some tip-off that some of the protestors are keeping a large number of weapons. However, as what Wong has seen, the protestors are just holding their umbrellas. He also points out that at that time, the police officers prepared to spout the protestors with pepper spray immediately, the priests then held up their hands and sing carols. They asked the protestors and the police officers to pack up their umbrellas and the pepper spray respectively when they were saying carols. At last, both the protestors and the police officers calmed down.

However, from 3 p.m. on 12 June, the atmosphere of the protest became intense. He witnessed that the protestors were attacked by tear gas and baton even though the protestors had never acted aggressively. He said it was difficult to understand why the Hong Kong Police Force had recognized the protest to be a “riot”.

Rev. Wu Chi-wai, another priest who participated in the protest, whimpered and said that as he remembered, most of the protestors are just aged 20 to 30. He thinks that the police officers, who suddenly moved backward, are being strategical at 3:30 p.m. on 12 June: when the protestors moved forward to occupy the empty space where the police officers were originally staying, the Hong Kong Police Force might consider itself legitimate to dispel the protestors by tear gas. He added that he himself was also under the attack of tear gas and he was trembling and difficulty breathing at that time. He witnessed that a group of the youngsters were “so frightened that they dared not moving”. He criticized that the leader of Hong Kong (Carrie Lam) falsely claimed herself to be like a kind mother, but in fact, she was just like a mother who abuses her child.

Rev. Lam Ka-yin pointed out that when he was talking with some young female, they appeared to be frightened because they thought that the police officers would not warn them when the police officers shot them with guns. He also claimed that he himself and some other preachers and priests requested the police officers to warn the protestors before dispelling the protestors again. However, the Hong Kong police officers insulted these preachers and priests, “Call upon your Jesus to show himself before me!” He felt sad for it and asked, “who is the real initiator causing this group of youngsters to participate in this protest?”

[Extradiction Law] "Tell your Jesus guy to come see us." Says the police. Missionary experiences conflict first hand and condemns violent supression to peaceful protest
More then 20 priests and missionaries held a press conference to tell others of their experience from the night of 11/6 to the afternoon of 12/6. They strongly condemn the force for suppressing peaceful protesters violently. Multiple priests choked up during the conference, and a priest claimed that when they were asking the force for warning when they take any action, one of they replied in a provoking tone.
"Tell your Jesus guy to come see us."
Ptiest Yuan pointed out, church leaders have sent letters to invite Carrie Lam, the Chief executive for a meeting, but have not received any news yet. He believes that the Chief executive may not make a direct response. He also mentioned that protesters who came to The Methodist Church in Wan Chai are hurt not just on the body, but more in their hearts. He believes that Carrie Lam should resign, as she shows no remorse for this.
This group of Christian priests and missionaries were with the protesters, singing hymns for over 8 hours until the venue was cleared by the police. Priest Wong pointed out that after the end of the prayer meeting at 11/6 night, some priests stayed voluntarily, and sang hymns non-stop until the next prayer meeting at 7am morning on 12/6. Unexpectedly, at 11am, the force claimed to receive information of large scale weapon hoarding, but from what he saw the protesters were only holding umbrellas. He also pointed out the force immediately went into formation and pulled out their tear gas, so the group of priests went hand in hand and sang hymns. They asked the protesters to close their umbrellas and the force to put away their tear gas, at last both sides calmed down.
The atmosphere tensed at 3pm. He witnessed that the protesters were met with tear gas and batons when they haven't rushed. He said it is hard to comprehend why the police call this a "riot".
Another priest, Wu cannot stop himself from choking up when he told us that most of the protesters are around 20-30 years old. He suggests that the force's retreat at around half past 3 is a strategy, when protesters see space for going forward, the force would have a reason to use tear gas to disprese the crowd. He said he also suffered from the tear gas, he was shaking and had difficulty breathing. He accused Carrie Lam for claiming to be a good mother, while she was a torturer when he saw many young people in immobile from fear.
Priest Lam pointed out, Some young girls felt scared because the force did not give warning when firing from his conversations with them. He also mentioned that when he asked the force to give warning before dispersing the crowd with other priests, the police replied rudely and "asked your Jesus guy to come meet us." He felt pained about this.
"Who forced these young people to take to the streets?"
