It cannot be overstated how enormously this has backfired on the conservative forces inside the Liberal Party who detonated the leadership of Malcolm Turnbull in order to seize control of the party and steer it in another direction.
Peter Dutton, their champion, has failed.
A majority of people in the party room rejected their push and opted for an alternative.
Scott Morrison, while ideologically conservative, is not loved by the conservative factional players in the Liberal Party. Morrison, who has been treasurer under Turnbull, could well represent more continuity than change.
Think of the destruction inflicted on the Coalition government in this chaotic messy week. Yet another prime minister torn down, another leadership crisis undermining Australians' confidence in their political system.
And after all that, Turnbull still had 40 backers in the 85-person party room. 40 people opposed having a leadership spill.
You'll recall one of the key moments this week was when cabinet ministers Mathias Cormann, Mitch Fifield and Michaelia Cash stood up and publicly declared they had resigned and wanted Turnbull gone as PM. They said this was because a majority of their colleagues felt the same way. Turns out this was not true. If those three had stayed with Turnbull, he would have survived. They – and others – are damaged by this.
And it will not end the civil war inside the Liberal Party between the moderate and conservative factions. In fact, some were threatening serious punishment if Morrison got in the way of a Dutton prime ministership.
