I departed my role as Head Coach of Lee Man Football Club in March of this year.
My second spell which played a part in me accepting the role after a call from the Owner and Club Manager.
Today, the final game of the season and a chance to win the league, like I do with all my clubs or roles, I only hope they can get it over the line. 💪🏼🏆
I enjoyed my time and thoroughly enjoyed working with a long time friend as assistant Darren Read. ♥️
Of course, you take a role knowing that things are not what they should be:
• 🔻 Poor Pre-Season = Conditioning is a major issue
• ❓Limited Staff Resources = Quality not Quantity
• 🔍 Recruitment = You need your own windows
• 🤝 Internal Culture and Professionalism = Takes time
• 🗓️ Schedule = It’s never perfect
All of the above I saw as a positive challenge to overcome which I felt I successfully navigated and improved. Of course, implementing the Training Model 🧬 and adapting a Game Model 🧠 were non-negotiables.
Additionally, I had a lot of support from the Club Manager which I’m grateful for and the Club Consultant, who is leaving also, at the grand old age of 70+. The relationship is still very good, just some times it doesn’t work. 💯
On reflection, it is important that when anyone takes a lead role, you obtain clarity of other roles in the Club whether senior or of a lesser level. That support mechanism is vital and they have to be moving towards a common goal. That wasn’t always the case, without airing issues in public; this is for those about to move into new roles. 💼
I’ve held the role of Technical Director and Director of Football previously and at different levels and not once did I think about coaching the team myself. You pick the hat and you wear it with class and integrity. It’s also the same as an Assistant, which again, as above, you hold with integrity.
I left with a league record of 5 wins and a draw; unbeaten in 6 games which have contributed to today and I hope the boys can get it over the line.
