Always liked Varane, and the main article is a brilliant interview.
However this does show the folly of bringing these kinds of players in to the dressing room at the same time as there being a permanent churn of managers trying to reset the culture and the playing style.
They’ve had brilliant careers, but were also lucky to play in very stable clubs with teams full of superstars used to winning everything. They also run on automatic, especially Real… Pop them on the pitch and they’ll win.
That’s not United at all, certainly not their squad… and Varane for example, saw four separate managers in his time at United. You can forgive him for thinking he knows better than all of them.
I’m sure this won’t get much sympathy in here but you’ve got to feel for RR and TH, faced with a triumvirate of super successful players in Ronaldo, Varane and eventually Casemiro who want to do things their way, along with a second bunch of overpaid yet underperforming players like Rashford, Sancho etc. who think they are as good as the former group.
You wouldn’t stand a chance. Hence why TH wanted Ronaldo out and Ruben wanted Rashford out. Top build a new culture, and a new way of playing you need younger, hungrier players who are prepared to listen.
Luckily there’s not many of these players left at United. Maguire, Bruno, that’s about it. And neither of them have ever struck me as trouble makers.
