Talking to the Post before Wong’s arrest, Kam, whose ProEvents Group has attracted a number of major clubs to the region, said the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, were all interested in being part of the first major football match at the 50,000-seat Kai Tak Stadium.
Still, Kam was confident of bringing big names to the city, and raised the prospect of a four-team tournament, while also not ruling out staging multiple stand-alone matches in July.
“We have spoken to a number of interested clubs, [among them] Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, PSG, Tottenham, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Brighton,” Kam said.
Kam said any four-team competition this summer would involve at least one Hong Kong side, because of the punitive cost of securing major clubs.
“We will wait to see which clubs we have coming, then begin talking to local sides,” he said. “That could mean Kitchee being involved, or the Hong Kong representative team, or a Hong Kong Premier League XI.”
A spokeswoman for the Football Association of Hong Kong, China (HKFA) said the imminent opening of Kai Tak would provide “a great opportunity to host more football events … not limited to Barcelona, but for all local and overseas clubs”.
Kam said negotiations with clubs would accelerate after the February 1 Lunar New Year Cup match between teams of World Legends and Hong Kong Legends, which his company is promoting. The businessman is targeting a Hong Kong Stadium crowd of around 30,000 to watch the likes of Kaka, Cafu, David Silva and Rivaldo.
