●Sources close to the situation claim that, to a degree, there has been a dilution of Edu’s power behind the scenes.

●Tim Lewis has seen his influence grow since his appointment as a non-executive director to the Arsenal board in 2020. Departure of Vinai Venkatesham, who worked closely with Edu, would have arrived as a blow to him.

●There was a sense that Edu may have been tailor-made as Venkatesham’s successor - though it was a position eventually taken by Garlick, whose reputation within English football is strong.

●At the start of the summer there was, according to sources, an emerging sense Edu was getting itchy feet. Sense that his role had gone stale at Arsenal and wanted a new challenge. It’s understood that Edu recognised the attraction of an influential position within a multi-club umbrella.

●Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is an admirer of Edu and is willing to give the Brazilian the keys to his multi-club operation which also includes Olympiakos and Rio Ave. He is also trying to add another European side to his stable of clubs.

●Forest’s interest in Edu originates from the summer and talks have taken place discreetly. Edu and Marinakis have a personal relationship, the pair were spotted dining at the same table of the Gerando Falcoes charity event in London earlier this year.

●News of the administrator’s exit arrived as a shock to many at the club on Monday morning. He is a popular figure at the club.
