Somebody's gotta rip the band-aid off. The DCEU has been in the long slow death spiral since Batman v Superman but no one wanted to admit it. The writing has been on the wall for years. The DCEU is nowhere near as good as it can and should be. DC characters deserve way better than this.
I loved Cavill as Superman and was looking forward to Man of Steel 2. But at the end of the day, none of this shit is working. Nothing is connected. Mistakes built on top of mistakes built on top of mistakes. Someone with a vision has to start from scratch.
We should have had Man of Steel 2 in 2016, but they turned it into BvS and on top of that shoe horned in the Death of Superman arc. Then they rushed into Justice League and Darkseid. They were trying to speedrun the DC comics continuity.
The current plan before Gunn and Safran got there was to START a Flash franchise with Flashpoint. START!! I'll say it again... START a Flash franchise with Flashpoint. Hamada's plan after that was to rush into Crisis on Infinite Earths. We've barely got the DCEU on its feet, barely gotten to know Superman OR Batman because of all this rushing to iconic DC stories without laying any of the groundwork.
That's been the problem all along. They just want to rush to the BIG THING from the comics.
2nd Superman story = Doomsday/Death of Superman----> A build up that took decades upon decades in the comics. We barely know this Superman and now we've killed him. Did any of you shed a tear in the theater when this happened? I didn't.
1st Batman story = Older Batman whose Robin has already been murdered by the Joker. Wait, what? This universe had a Robin, but you're just going to skip that? Joker murdered Robin in this universe but we just fast-forwarded past that to get to Doomsday and Darkseid as quick as we possibly could.
Let's slow down and think about this for a moment.
They were in such a hurry to kill Superman they did it in his second movie. We barely got to know him. No tears shed.
They were in such a hurry to kill Jimmy Olsen they did it in his first scene. I didn't even know it was Jimmy Olsen the first time I watched the movie. Not only did we not get to know him, we didn't even know it was him that died. I honestly didn't even know I was supposed to feel sad.
They were in such a hurry to kill Robin they did it before his first scene. In fact, they did it before they even cast an actor. You thought we were sad when someone died in their second movie, or in their first scene? Wait til we kill them before you've even met them or knew they existed.
None of this leaves any time for us to get to know or like the characters. I was ready to love Superman but I didn't get a chance to. I was ready to love this Batman but I didn't even get a Batman story. They were too busy sprinting to Justice League fighting Darkseid, that they didn't have any breath left in their lungs to tell me a story about characters.
I remember the day I walked out of BvS in the movie theater. I looked at my phone and saw that Snyder had begun filming Justice League. I knew in that moment it was a mistake. I couldn't believe they were still going with this vision. But here we are at the end of 2022, when someone with power at that company is finally ready to actually rip the band aid off and start over.
DC deserves better. Superman and Batman deserve better. Henry Cavill deserved sooo much better.
