Newcastle have “expressed interest” in Reims defender Wout Faes who is also a teammate of fellow target Hugo Ekitike, according to Belgian outlet Het Laatste Nieuws.
We will face tough competition, however, as Jose Mourinho – who led Roma to Europa Conference League glory last night – are currently leading the race for the former Anderlecht talent.
The 24-year-old centre-back – whose hair resembles former Mag Fabricio Coloccini – has become a key player for his French club and is expected to leave this summer.
After making 37 league appearances as Reims finished 12th in Ligue 1 last season, the report states that a move away is “imminent” for Faes, with Ekitike also expected to follow him out of the exit door.
One advantage we do have over Roma, whose offer is currently the “most concrete”, is their poor financial situation which, given our newfound wealth, should not be a problem for us if we decide to make a serious bid.
Another one to watch in our hunt for at least one new central defender this summer?
