【香港戰役圖錄】12月21日,港督楊慕琦向倫敦報告守軍不能持續抵抗,而且日軍將控制市區,因此向倫敦詢問能否和日軍談判停火。時任陸軍部作戰署長的堅尼地上校代其上司帝國總參謀長艾倫布魯克上將回答,指守軍抵抗到抵可「使日軍認為進攻馬來亞和星加坡將會遇上同樣堅決的抵抗」,因此認為守軍暫不應投降。倫敦即回覆楊慕琦,指「不能考慮投降」。守軍繼續戰鬥達四日之久。
[The Battle in Rare Images] On 21 Dec 1941, Governor Mark Young telegraphed London to report that effective resistance would soon end and the civil population would be overrun. Colonel John Kennedy, Director of Military Operations at the War Office under the Chief of Imperial General Staff General Alan Brooke, suggested that further resistance was "psychologically" useful as the Japanese "would judge our resistance in Malaya and elsewhere by the same standard". Thus, London replied to Young that there must be "no thought of surrender". The garrison resisted for four more days.
