"He was just ahead in his head. He made Manchester United tick. Every time we were playing them we needed to find a way to stop him.

"It's true. I think Stevie G comes really close to him. But Paul Scholes would have to win."

Henry went on to remember England’s terrific midfield during the so called ‘Golden Generation’, which included Scholes, Gerrard, David Beckham and Frank Lampard.

"You guys in England had, on paper, the best midfield in the world,” he added, in front of Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher.

Manchester United great Paul Scholes reacts to Pep Guardiola comments

Paul Scholes said it was 'nice' to receive praise from the world's best players while he was at Manchester United.

During his playing career, Scholes was described as the most complete midfielder of his generation by Pep Guardiola and Xavi, while Zinedine Zidane said there was no better midfielder than United's No.18.

Asked about those comments during a recent appearance on the official Manchester United podcast, Scholes said: "Of course when you hear people say that, it's nice, isn't it. These really were the best players, Xavi, Zidane... Guardiola was brilliant as well at Barcelona. So it's obviously nice."

When Scholes was asked what his mindset would be going into games against teams that Xavi, Guardiola and Zidane played in, Scholes joked: "Let's finish it, please get to the end, unscathed.

"They were brilliant weren't they? You shouldn't really go out thinking about damage limitation... We thought we could score goals, we thought we could win games against them but I think the later teams that they had, Guardiola's Barcelona teams, they were unreal weren't they? Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets, Messi, just everywhere you looked."
