Dear Colleagues,
Two weeks ago we were all shocked and saddened to learn of the death of our colleague Samuel. Tragedies such as this are difficult to understand or rationalise. Although we would like answers and clarity, none of us have any information or insight, or are in any position, to make this possible. Sadly, rumours have surfaced in the media and online forums which serve no purpose other than to add to the pain and suffering of the family and those who knew him well. I respectfully ask colleagues to resist the temptation to engage in any speculation about this matter.
We understand there are concerns or comments from colleagues about the department's reaction, which I would like to address as best as I can. In regards to the sudden resignation, an exit interview was carried out immediately. As soon as directorate officers heard of the matter, they also spoke with team members in the office to gain insight or deeper understanding for the decision. As best we can determine, nothing we heard indicated any issues of concern. After the tragedy, directorate officers again reached out to the respective team to first of all offer help or counselling, and to again assess whether there was any indication of any problems, including workload concerns relating to the transfer of an IO team-mate some four months ago. What I can confirm about this is that workload was shared amongst those in the team and that no serious workload issues had been raised by any team members. The Admin team has since then also provided information on counselling services for any colleagues who feel it may help. If colleagues have specific requests in this regard please let us know.
On learning of the death, management quickly contacted the family to offer our deepest condolences and to provide all possible assistance. As a mark of respect for the family, I will not go into details. But, I would like colleagues to know that we have been acting in accordance with the family's wishes and will continue to do so and render all possible assistance.
The directorate notes the e-mails sent to management and copied to "All" by Katherine, CIO/DM on April 5, 9 and 13 under the subject of "Grade Management Review". As in any department, colleagues may hold different views towards management or indeed their supervisors or fellow colleagues. Issues, views and concerns raised with the management are always followed up in line with established mechanisms. Colleagues can and do request meetings with directorate from time to time to discuss any issues or problems they may encounter. For example, we understand concerns about increasing workload in recent years, and have made concerted efforts to boost manpower to cope with these increasing demands. I am happy to provide details if colleagues find it useful.
We respect and welcome views of colleagues on issues of concern. The well-being of colleagues is close to our hearts. We will arrange a meeting with Press Secretaries and Section Heads next week to hear your views and concerns (Admin will provide details in a follow-up e-mail). I would ask Press Secs and section heads to sound out colleagues so a full and frank exchange of views can be held. I understand AGIO is seeking views from colleagues, which is welcome. All directorate colleagues will continue to reach out to colleagues to hear their views, feedback and suggestions.
COVID-19 is still around. Again, please take care and stay healthy.
Yours,
Rex
