致澳洲駐香港及澳門總領事館公開信
2019年6月24日，澳洲昆士蘭大學有香港學生嘗試在校園建立連儂牆，結果遭二百名中國人包圍，遭受惡言及暴力對待。事後校方已表示對暴力零容忍，並重申言論自由的重要性。可是中國駐布里斯班總領事館卻發表聲明，支持中國學生的「愛國行為」，將和平示威的學生標籤為「反華勢力」。
中國學生行為可能出愚昧無知，可是領事館的言論卻是公然挑戰澳洲的言論自由，大力鼓吹極端民族主義。隨着中國人口在澳洲增加，這種惡勢力的助大以及對澳洲的負面影響不容忽視。懇請澳洲政府嚴肅對待事件，促請中方收回言論，並保護港人在澳洲的言論自由和人身安全。謝謝！

We refer to the clash between the Pro-China and Pro-Hong Kong students which unfolded at the University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus on 24th July 2019. The incident received widespread media coverage, including The Guardian and ABC.
The University, the Vice-Chancellor and President have subsequently issued two respective statements in response to the incident. In particular, both statements emphasized on the University’s core value – to enable open, respectful and lawful free speech.
It has come to our attention that the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Brisbane has issued a statement on 26th July 2019. Among other things, the Chinese Consulate-General endorsed the “patriotic acts” by the Chinese students and condemned “incitement of Anti-Chinese sentiment”. With respect, we wish to express our disagreement with the position of the Chinese Consulate-General.
The said statement represents an open challenge to the freedom of speech in Australia and is breeding nationalism. On the other hand, we also acknowledge the constant growth of Chinese population in Australia and the increase in the number of Chinese immigrants, which is precisely why the incident as well as the Chinese Consulate-General’s statement should not be taken lightly nor ignored.
We therefore respectfully ask the Australian Government to:
- take and handle the incident in a serious manner;
- urge the Chinese Consulate-General to withdraw his statement dated 26th July 2019; and
- protect the freedom of expression and safety of Hong Kong people in Australia.
