Dear Dean of Student,
I am writing to lodge a complaint regarding the insensitive comment about the anti-extradition law protest made by your employee Liu Wenbin, who is currently a teaching assistant and also a MPhil student of the Department of History, on his social media account.
Hong Kong is currently facing a critical moment and the protest is crucial in safeguarding the freedom and democracy of Hong Kong. Almost every Hongkonger is now going through blood, sweat and tears in fighting for a better society. Liu, however, made a very unprofessional and distasteful comment on his social media account, publicly showing grudges against the social movement and threatening to fail local students who joined the protest these few days in the coming semester. His remarks are now being circulated online, outraging thousands of netizens.
I am writing to ask you to look into these matters, take disciplinary action against Liu and review your employee‘s social media policy immediately. I would also like to seize this change to urge the school to prevent hiring non-local Chinese students as teaching assistants in the future. Ability in making academic achievements should never be the only thing to be value when the school is hiring employees and admitting students, no matter undergraduate or postgraduate, personal traits are also important. Especially for lecturers and postgraduate students who in many cases would become teaching assistants and could affect others’ academic results. With the threatening remarks made by Liu, I believe many fellow Hongkongers would doubt whether these non-local Chinese people are professional enough to create a fair environment and teach our students.
I look forward to hearing from you shortly.
Best Regards,
