On the day preparations for the 2018/19 campaign began, we spoke with Danny Drinkwater to hear about pre-season from a player’s perspective.
Those members of the squad who were not involved in the World Cup returned to Cobham to be met by glorious sunshine. After easing back in with medical tests and light jogging, outdoor work will intensify next week.
‘I’m really looking forward to getting going again,’ Drinkwater confirmed. It will be his first pre-season with the Blues having joined from Leicester on deadline day last September.
‘I had a good break over the summer, it was nice to get away for a bit. The World Cup has obviously been great so that gets you in the mood again, especially with England doing so well. You just want to get back out on the grass and start training again.
‘It’s all about building up your fitness at this stage,’ added the midfielder. ‘Pre-season is always hard, your body needs time to get used to it, but it’s such an important time of the year. You need to get the balance right between work and rest, watching what you eat and giving yourself the best chance of getting into that rhythm.’
Match preparation, another crucial way of gaining fitness, begins on the other side of the world this summer. We travel to Perth in Western Australia in a fortnight’s time and Drinkwater hopes that trip sets the tone for a successful season at Stamford Bridge.
‘It should be a good trip. I’ve never been to Australia before and I’m excited to see it having heard so much about it over the years. The stadium looks fantastic and it’s always nice to go and play in front of your fans from all over the world. Chelsea is a massive club all over the world and I can't wait to experience that.
‘We’re all determined to do better than last season, although it was a good way to end with the FA Cup. We know what is expected of this club and we want to win trophies, that’s what it’s all about.’
