There is lots and lots of doubt surrounding Lionel Messi right now.
First and foremost: will he be at the World Cup next summer? Argentina face missing out on the tournament unless they beat Ecuador in Quito on Tuesday.
Secondly, will he renew his contract with Barcelona?
The topic has been a matter of urgent concern for months now and despite the statements from Barcelona’s president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, Messi’s pen is yet to grace the paper.
And according to the latest report in Spain’s AS, Barcelona’s confidence has evaporated in recent weeks.
Everything has been verbally agreed for ages but circumstances have apparently changed and with them, so may have Messi’s mind.
Like a lion in a nearby bush, Manchester City are ready and able to pounce at the first sign of weakness.
Messi’s deal expires at the end of July 2018 and City are willing to do everything possible to bring the Argentine to the Etihad Stadium. AS quote sources close to the club as saying that they ‘have held serious conversations with the player’s entourage’.
Manchester City have been linked to Messi for a while but they may now be closer than ever before to potentially acquiring his services.
For now, Messi will be fully focused on helping his country make it Russia before turning his attention to any potential reunion with Pep Guardiola.
