Jeh Vas, the overnight Hong Kong YouTube and social media smash hit, pledged last week to fight for football in the city to gain global recognition.
A good enough player to be asked for a 2017 trial at Real Zaragoza in Spain, Vas quit his office job last year to dedicate himself to his increasingly popular football content-creation empire.
Vas’ Real Zaragoza try-out was scuppered by a back injury that required three months of bed rest. He played for Tai Chung and settled into work for an export company before spying a gap in the market for “good, informative and engaging videos”.
He will be producing up-close content from the forthcoming Saudi Super Cup, but marries his excitement over more potential high-profile collaborations with a wish to provide a video outlet “to showcase the really special players we have here”.
“An amazing Cole Palmer goal will have hundreds of millions of views, but [Lee Man and Hong Kong forward] Everton Camargo scores a left-foot curler almost every game and doesn’t get the same recognition,” Chelsea fan Vas said.
“Eyes are constantly on Instagram and YouTube; we need to get Hong Kong football there to get it more recognition.”
He is planning a series on which local team he should support, and more entertaining challenges to reveal players’ personalities. Vas is encouraged that clubs are slowly improving their output, too.
“We want to get the word out about Hong Kong football, and for more people to come to watch,” he said.
