Bordeaux mixture is a fungicide and bactericide used primarily in agriculture to control fungal diseases on crops like vines, fruit trees, and vegetables. It is a blue-green solution or suspension made by mixing copper sulfate (CuSO₄) with slaked lime (calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)₂) in water. The resulting compound, basic copper sulfate, forms a protective coating on plant surfaces, releasing copper ions that inhibit fungal spore germination and bacterial growth.
Typically prepared as a 1:1 or 2:1 ratio of copper sulfate to lime, it is applied as a spray. It was developed in the 19th century in Bordeaux, France, initially to protect vineyards from downy mildew. While effective, it must be used carefully to avoid copper accumulation in soil, which can be toxic to plants and the environment.
