WhatsApp is set to launch a new feature that allows users to create unique usernames and chat without sharing their phone numbers, offering greater privacy—particularly in group chats and business interactions. Until now, users had to exchange phone numbers to connect, a setup that raised concerns about personal data exposure.
The upcoming username feature, currently being tested in beta version 25.17.10.70 (as reported by WABetaInfo), aims to change that by letting users connect through usernames instead. These usernames must be 3–30 characters long, completely unique, include at least one letter, and can only contain lowercase letters, numbers, periods, or underscores. They cannot start with “www.” or end with extensions like “.com”.
Once a username is successfully created, WhatsApp confirms it with a fun confetti animation. From then on, people who don’t have your phone number will see your username in chats and group conversations, giving users more control over their identity and privacy.
