James Gunn Blames Disney for “Killing” Marvel Studios — Then Clarifies
In a recent Rolling Stone interview, DC Studios co-chair and Superman director James Gunn didn’t hold back when reflecting on Marvel’s recent struggles:
“That wasn’t fair. It wasn’t right. And it killed them,” Gunn said, referencing Disney’s aggressive content mandates. “We don’t have the mandate [at DC] to make X number of shows and movies. We’re focused on quality.”
Naturally, the quote blew up online — and Gunn later took to Threads to clarify:
“To be clear… I didn’t say ‘it killed them’ like they’re over — but they were screwed by a situation they couldn’t control. They’re on the other side of that now, which is good.”
He added that the streaming gold rush led to “a demand for ‘content’ that couldn’t possibly be met,” forcing movies to premiere on TV before getting a proper theatrical run. “The insanity has died down & balanced out… Thank God.”
Do you think Disney killed Marvel’s momentum — or just derailed it for a while?
