Say a team does that. They retain his Bird rights they can pay him more than anyone else or even do a sign&trade. Say KD wants to leave he is limited to only signing with teams under the cap if he wants big $. If he wants to sign with a contender over the cap - mid level.

Suns will make the best deal for them. There are teams willing to trade for KD regardless of the extension. If such a team does that they have his Bird rights and if he does not want to play for them after a year they can do a sign and trade. It's really not that complicated.
