Newmarket | Race 5: 2000 Guineas
I’m looking forward to riding EXPANDED in the 2000 Guineas. He’s a very lightly raced colt by Wootton Bassett out of a Galileo mare. He won on debut at the Curragh in October and then just a week later, was second in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes, beaten a neck having to make his own running which wasn’t ideal.
We think he’s a very talented colt and the mile (1600m) will suit him. He’s rated 118, which is the joint second highest in the field, and it’s very unusual to have a rating that high after just two starts. If he can find a little bit more improvement, he’s right in the mix for winning the Guineas and I think he has a good chance. He’s been working well and that’s why he’s here.
Of the others, I think Ruling Court is a big danger and will be suited by the quick ground at Newmarket. It’s interesting that William [Buick] has chosen to ride him over Shadow Of Light who is rated higher.
Field Of Gold won a Group 3 at Sandown last summer and didn’t run badly when fourth in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere in October. His first run this season in the Craven was very impressive where he had a couple of these in behind him.
They’d be the main two, but I respect Scorthy Champ, who has had three runs and is a Group 1 winner, and Green Impact, another Wootton Bassett, who beat Delacroix twice last season. They bring a good level of form.
