“It’s our job to get players into the Hong Kong team, and it has to be their ultimate goal,” Chan said. “We want our foreign players to get recognition, too. If any player does well, they’ll have the chance to go to another level.
“Our long-term plan is to provide a platform for young players. If they come to Kowloon and work hard, they’ll have chances to play.
“We gave Lung-ho an opportunity and he showed he’s good. There are lots of young Hong Kong players with potential, but they have to train well before we put them on the pitch. Any successful player has done hours of work that nobody’s seen.”
Chan, who is among the cohort on this year’s inaugural Hong Kong AFC Pro Licence Diploma, would eventually like to coach overseas.
“I didn’t have the chance to go abroad as a player … let’s see how far I can go,” he said.
