As of 2021, Hong Kong had approximately 2.1 doctors per 1,000 people, an increase from 1.8 in 2011. This ratio is lower than that of several other developed regions; for instance, Singapore has 2.5 doctors per 1,000 people, Japan 2.5, the United States 2.6, the United Kingdom 3.0, and Australia 3.8. In 2024, the number of registered doctors in Hong Kong was around 16,000, equating to approximately 2.16 doctors per 1,000 citizens.
The Hong Kong government has recognized this shortage and is taking steps to address it, including increasing the number of medical training places and exploring the establishment of a third medical school.
