A Gallup poll marking the 1,000th day of the war in Ukraine shows 52 percent of Ukrainians favor negotiations to end the conflict with Russia. Around 38 percent prefer to continue fighting, and 9 percent are undecided or declined to answer. The sentiment marks a significant shift from early in the war when 73 percent of Ukrainians supported continuing military efforts after Russia’s February 2022 invasion.
Support for ongoing conflict has steadily declined, dropping below 50 percent this year, with the largest decreases in regions farther from active fighting. Gallup’s findings also reveal that 52 percent of Ukrainians are open to territorial concessions as part of a peace deal, while 38 percent oppose this, and 10 percent remain unsure. The surveys were conducted in August and October with a margin of error of three percentage points.
As Ukraine employed U.S.-made long-range missiles within Russian territory, Russia escalated its response, moving 10,000 North Korean troops to contested areas and lowering its nuclear weapon-use threshold. Moscow has criticized the U.S. for permitting Ukraine to target Russian locations, accusing Washington of fueling the conflict.
