Norris ‘dismantles’ Verstappen’s feat: “A gamble that paid off. He’s not talent, he was lucky”:
– Lando Norris, after a challenging São Paulo GP where he started from pole and finished sixth, voiced his criticism of the red flag rules that allowed Max Verstappen, who started 17th, to claim victory. Norris pointed to the red flag incident, triggered by Franco Colapinto’s crash, which enabled those who hadn’t pitted to change their tires freely, giving Verstappen an advantage.
– Reflecting on Verstappen’s win, Norris commented,
“You take a gamble and it paid off for them, it’s not talent, it’s just luck.”
– Norris expanded on the impact of the red flag rule, saying,
“Verstappen? He drove well and was lucky… I had confidence in the team and in what they say… This is luck for them [Red Bull]. They were lucky. They benefited from a rule that is not appreciated by anyone. None of us drivers agree, but maybe they do now.”
– Norris noted that free pit stops under a red flag often cause strategic shake-ups, adding,
“Sometimes things go one way and sometimes the other way – with the red flag the stops were free. George [Russell] would have deserved to win the race. The final result? It’s a gamble that has paid off, it’s not talent, it’s just luck.”
– Norris now trails Verstappen by 62 points, with three races and a Sprint remaining, making Verstappen’s path to a fourth consecutive title seem inevitable.
