Lee Man appoint Hong Kong boss Ashley Westwood’s assistant as head coach: sources
Hong Kong’s out-of-form Premier League champions Lee Man have decided to appoint Matt Holland, assistant to Hong Kong boss Ashley Westwood, as their head coach, sources have told the Post.
Holland joined the Hong Kong representative team staff before last month’s Fifa international window, although the local football association did not officially announce the 36-year-old’s appointment.
The Welshman fits that description and the Post has been told that, after missing out on other high-profile targets, Lee turned to Holland – who was the club’s academy director for two years from 2020 – in his bid to revive Lee Man’s season.
Holland’s Hong Kong duties will delay his start, meaning caretaker Chu Siu-kei and assistant Szeto Man-chun will be in charge for an Asian Champions League 2 game away against Bangkok United on Wednesday, and Saturday’s home league clash with Kowloon City.
Holland’s first match as boss is likely to be the ACL2 game against Nam Dinh in Vietnam on November 27, which comes just three days before the Senior Shield semi-final against Kitchee on November 30.
Holland managed Nongbua FC in Thai League 2 for 16 months until October 2019. He was previously technical director of fellow Thai club Buriram United, and has worked as No 2 to Westwood at Indian club Bengaluru FC as well as with the Afghanistan national team.
