The chances are you will never return to Peru/Bolivia again. So don’t be afraid to try local food and be sure to immerse yourself in the local cultural experiences. The worst thing you can do is regret not trying or not doing something here when you look back 5 years from now
Use of cash on your trip
ATM withdrawal fees for foreigners can be very high, so use your credit/debit card as much as possible. Be aware that its hard to get change from large bills in small shops etc. Use official money exchange facilities, not street sellers.
Be aware of your belongings
Peru Hop is EXTREMELY safe and Peru in general is quite safe. However, just like in huge cities like Barcelona, pickpockets do exist. Keep your valuables in a small bag with you at all times, and never leave them unattended in a hostel or in a store.
Get a local Sim card
Whilst a lot of places have wifi, a local sim card will be a huge help for you on your trip. You can get them at the Tourist Information Center in Cusco or check our App for some options.
Wi-Fi
As stated on our website, our buses don’t have wifi, once you start your trip and leave the city, there is no signal. Other bus companies lie and claim they have wifi but it never works and it's why they have such poor reviews. Use your time on the bus to interact with people or take in the incredible scenery and catch up with wifi at various places along the way!
Don’t use street taxis
Taxi’s do not use meters to calculate fares, you negotiate before you get in. Most are fine, but a typical scam is to tell a tourist the price is 50, but then when you arrive at the destination, they try tell you its 50 dollars and not 50 soles. Use Cabify (Uber is normally ok too) or the Airport Express bus from Lima Airport.
Machu Picchu Advice
It is essential to book you tour/trek for Machu Picchu ahead of time. The entrances and the the train tickets sell out in advance. Do not risk the opportunity to see one of the 7 Wonders of the World and ensure you have your tickets secured ahead of time.
TIP: Trains to MP leave from the Sacred Valley. If you plan to visit both the Sacred Valley and MP then book a 2 day Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu Combo tour to maximise your time.
After over 10 years of experience we recommend Yapa Explorers for value and the quality of experience provided.
Be Careful with Local Travel Agencies
We often say “if the price seems too good to be true, it probably is”. Typical issues include you paying a cheap price, only to discover on the actual tour that lots of things are then not included and you end up having to pay more. Another one is them showing you a bus or a boat that they will be using for transport, and the real one then is half the size. Be careful who you book with!
Lima Restaurant Tips
Central and Maido are world famous, but very expensive. For local food at local prices, SAHA is a great option in Lima as is Tanta. Ask our onboard travel coordinators for food tips along the journey.
Download our App
The app works without internet so can be very useful on the bus. Its full of useful info, maps, tips and advice, and also gives you access to the Hop Login where you can change all your bus dates, pickup locations, add tours and activities and much more.
Have patience with the locals
Peru is a developing country (half the country do not own a fridge!). The minimum wage is $300 per month! Everything in Peru usually runs so late (except the Peru Hop buses!) and basic services leave a lot to be desired! We, the founders, have a lot of grey hairs now from the stresses of trying to get things done over here. It’s an amazing country, and you will LOVE it, but just go with the flow, relax, and enjoy your vacation!
