Thompson, a Group 1 winner who rode at 50kg in last year's Melbourne Cup when he steered $151 bolter True Marvel into eighth place, said he is keen to secure a Melbourne Cup ride this year.
Without a minimum topweight required in the Melbourne Cup and both Without A Fight (58.5kg) and Via Sistina (56kg) unlikely to make the race, there is an increasing likelihood that no horse in the race will carry more than 55.5kg this year.
It is expected to create additional opportunities for lightweight jockeys who can ride as low as the 50kg minimum and Thomspon is hoping to capitalise on the unique scenario.
