Sheer orientalism.
It’s oversimplification to say “Cheung and the Taiwanese judge are both ethnic Chinese”. Hong Kong people are from Canton (south China) while most modern Taiwanese trace their roots to Minnan (Southeast China). They share different mother tongue and culture. Not to mention HK and Taiwan have evolved so differently throughout the 19,20th century. It’s like saying both France and Italy are European so they will conspire against others .
“Chinese” is just an umbrella term as much as “European”. It’s OK that a lot of foreigners don’t get it but it’s just not an effective argument in this case. There’s zero incentive/motivation for the judge to bias towards Cheung. The South Korean argument is even more absurd.
At the end tho it is about the sport itself. If the complaint is successful then Hong Kongers should shut up. If no the Italians should shut up.
