“There was screaming and yelling and Vivian was fighting and then the phone went dead,” Mitchell said. “So, it’s pretty clear that they got to her one way or another.”
Silver, 74, was born in Winnipeg but immigrated to Israel in 1974. She, along with her late husband and two children, settled in Kibbutz Be’eri, which is located less than five kilometres from the eastern border with Gaza and was among the first to be hit by the invasion.
“Vivian’s captivity is yet another heinous Hamas war crime. All Canadians and people of conscience around the world should be calling for her release and condemning Hamas criminality,” wrote Irwin Cotler, chair of the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, on X, formerly Twitter.
