Greece ‘too dangerous’ for referees
Uefa has terminated its agreement to send elite referees to oversee matches in the Greek Super League after an Italian official, Davide Massa, was struck in the genitals by an assailant after the fiery Olympiacos-AEK derby.
Aleksander Ceferin, Uefa’s president, wrote to the Greek FA this week saying: “We must prioritise the safety of our match officials who must be kept away from such hostile and dangerous situations.”
It is a major blow for Steve Bennett, the former Premier League referee who is now chief referee in Greece, who had negotiated for international officials to oversee the Super League’s play-offs to try to reduce controversies.
