David Orstein: Manchester United candidate does a double-take
Examples of the kind of dysfunction that has been permitted to grip Manchester United of late were chronicled here last week, though the lack of joined-up thinking behind the scenes can still serve to amaze.
The Athletic has learned of one external candidate who has twice applied for separate senior roles within the football operation at the club in recent times with his credentials meriting an extensive interview for the first position, for all that he did not ultimately secure the job on offer.
However, upon attending the interview for a slightly different role within the same department at a later date, he was surprised to discover the official conducting the process — admittedly, a different interviewer — had been provided with no record of the candidate’s previous discussions with United and was blissfully unaware that he had been involved in a similar application at the club at an earlier date.
In effect, with nothing having been kept on file, the whole process had to start again from scratch, which hardly said much for in-house lines of communication.
