Liverpool are working on a deal to sign Fulham attacking midfielder Fabio Carvalho before Monday’s transfer deadline, The Athletic understands.
Carvalho, 19, has less than six months left on his current contract with the Championship side and will be available for a compensation fee in the summer.
Liverpool have tabled a bid for the attacking midfielder and the two clubs are now in talks regarding a transfer. Fulham remain determined to keep hold of Carvalho and on Friday, head coach Marco Silva publicly ruled out his departure before the end of this month.
It is thought that a loan-back deal could be on the table, allowing all parties to get what they want. Fulham are keen to keep Carvalho for their promotion push and will avoid losing him for a compensation fee in the summer. Liverpool, meanwhile, will head off fierce competition for his signature.
The Athletic reported last week that Liverpool were considering a move before the end of the transfer window. Carvalho’s future at Craven Cottage has been increasingly uncertain after the teenager rejected a new contract offer in November.
Fulham have been eager to tie down their talented academy product who joined at the age of 14. The player has received the backing of Silva and the club’s ownership but has decided against signing a new deal.
Liverpool previously signed Carvalho’s former youth team-mate Harvey Elliott from Fulham in 2019, in a deal that required a tribunal to settle a fee. The Merseyside club were told to pay an initial fee of £1.2 million for the then 16-year-old, however, with add-ons the compensation could rise to £4.3 million.
Carvalho made his Fulham debut in September 2020, and scored his first senior goal in the Premier League away to Southampton in May last year. Carvalho has gone on to make 16 Championship appearances this season, scoring seven goals
