HBO Max’s growth continues to impress as the streaming service had a great first quarter of 2021. Thanks to debuting blockbusters such as Godzilla vs. Kong and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the streaming service saw nearly 3 million additional subscribers. That amounts to a staggering number of 44.2 million customers for both HBO and HBO Max domestically. That is up from 2020’s $41.5 million mark.
According to Samba TV (per Deadline), the long awaited (and very good) Zack Snyder’s Justice League drew an impressive 1.8M HBO Max households during its first five minutes of release over its opening weekend.
The film ranked first on the "NPD Videoscan First Alert" chart for home media sales in the United States during its first week, as well as in the Blu-ray sales. Overall, it sold five times more than the second-ranked The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. 75% of the sales came from Blu-ray discs, with 38% from Ultra HD Blu-ray and 37% from traditional Blu-ray, while DVDs comprised 25% of the sales. In addition, the trilogy consisting of all three DCEU films directed by Snyder was ranked fourteenth on the Blu-ray sales chart.
