Paul Merson thinks 'really impressive' Arsenal-linked star could win PL Golden Boot next season
Paul Merson has boldly claimed that reported Arsenal target Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be in the running to win the Premier League Golden Boot in the upcoming season.
The Telegraph claimed last month that Arsenal are keen to sign the Everton forward, while Dean Jones revealed last week that Calvert-Lewin’s name always ‘crops up’ when Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar are discussing transfer targets.
The 24-year-old is a very unlikely target for the Gunners this summer, but he’s a target nonetheless. He will surely cost an absolute fortune, but if Merson’s bold prediction comes true, he’d be worth the big bucks.
After claiming that Harry Kane and Mo Salah are the favourites to win the Premier League Golden Boot, Merson told Sportskeeda: “I always like to pick someone out of the ordinary, so I’m going to go for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to be in the running for the Premier League Golden Boot as well.
“He started the 2020-21 season in stunning style, but Everton didn’t play to his strengths in the second half of the season.
“Rafa (Benitez) will make sure Calvert-Lewin gets the service he requires and urge his wingers to put balls into the box. He’s going to play every week and could have an outside chance of winning the Premier League Golden Boot if he builds on what he achieved last season.”
Calvert-Lewin, labelled as ‘really impressive‘ by Richarlison, started last season in magnificent fashion, scoring seven goals in his first five Premier League games. Many felt he could really challenge for the Golden Boot, but just five goals in the final four months of the league campaign cost him that chance.
That could change this term, especially if he joins Arsenal. The Gunners have nobody like Calvert-Lewin up front at the moment, and someone like him getting on the end of Kieran Tierney’s delightful crosses could change his and our club’s fortunes next term.
However, the chances of Arsenal signing Calvert-Lewin this summer are extremely slim, and there’s no point dreaming about this – unless Edu manages to pull off something incredible in the coming weeks.

Arsenal still after Martin Odegaard as midfielder questions Real Madrid future
The Martin Odegaard saga continues to crop up as the summer goes on, with multiple new reports on his future over the weekend.
Speaking on Onda Cero’s radio show at the weekend, Spanish reporter Carlos Bustillo claimed that Arsenal are once again interested in signing Martin Odegaard.
Fellow Spanish outlet AS reported in their print edition on Monday that Odegaard will remain at Real Madrid. But they seemed less certain in their coverage of the report on their website, where they wrote that the midfielder must show he has a place in the team.
In another article, they added that Arsenal are insisting on keeping the player, and Odegaard has been “left thinking” about his next step. There’s little certainty over what exactly is going to happen next.
For the time being, it appears that Real Madrid are keen to keep Odegaard around and he’s hoping to get a chance to impress for them. But it seems the door is still open for that to change before the deadline.
The Athletic recently reported that Real would listen to significant offers and Arsenal are still keen to bring him back – if that’s at all possible. It’s still not really clear whether it will be.
