Mr Scurr said over the years a number of Asian countries had looked at exporting fresh pineapples to Australia, but it had not been viable.
"There's limited demand for imported pineapples, I would suggest, however we need to take this seriously," he said.
"Because if our local supply ever became short it would open the window for imported product to come in."
He said Australia used to produce up to 140,000 tonnes of pineapples a year in the 1990s, but that had dropped to below 25,000 tonnes because the tinned-pineapple category had been overtaken by imports.
"Going back 30 years, Australia was short and they bought it [tinned pineapple] in from overseas, and now most of our tinned pineapple is imported largely from Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand," Mr Scurr said.
"All of the pineapple you buy on pizzas is 100 per cent imported, and most of the tinned stuff in the supermarket is imported.
"So hopefully all of our passionate Aussie consumers will keep buying Australian fresh pineapples."
