Dear Mr. Orlowski,

I am writing to express my concern over the possibility that the narration in the film, together with the use of some footages about the protest in Hong Kong, would result in audience’s misunderstanding towards the causes and the development of the democratic movement that took place in Hong Kong since last year.

To start with, starting from timecode around 1:00:07 of the film, the narration goes with ’the algorithm has become smarter and making people believe in conspiracy’, when the footage of Hongkongers dismantled a so-called ‘smart lamppost’ during one of the many protests in Hong Kong last year comes after. I understand the film here is trying to point out that people believed in the fake news about covid-19 spread among the social media. But when in fact Hong Kong protestors dismantled the lamppost because it was indeed surveillance lamppost built by the government to invade citizens’ privacy, together with the narration, the film seems to be suggesting that the protestors did so because they believed in the fake news about covid-19, which is not true.

And at timecode around 1:09:07, the narration goes with ’algorithms and manipulative politicians were becoming so expert at triggering us by making us believe in fake news’, when footages of Hong Kong protestors demonstrating last year come after. And right after that, the narration also goes ‘democracy were attacked worldwide with the prevalence of social media, and countries that were targeted run democratic election.’ There is no ‘democratic’ election in Hong Kong, and that is what Hongkongers has been striving for starting from 2014 in Umbrella revolution and 2019, and up till now, in Water Revolution. The sequence and the narration of the film have unavoidably misled people to think that Hongkongers were triggered and manipulated by social media and politicians, resulting in a series of large-scale demonstrations. It is a false description of what actually happened in Hong Kong.

I sincerely appreciate your efforts, and I also in fact, share some of the thoughts mentioned in the film about the potential risks brought to the society by the social media. Nevertheless, the example of Hong Kong is just wrongly deployed to support arguments alike. As a Hongkonger that has been through the blood and tears of the Water Revolution , I would appreciate if clarification and re-edit could be made to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings. It would mean a lot to millions of the freedom fighters in Hong Kong.

I am looking forward to hearing reply from you.

Yours faithfully,
你大名
