Dear all Arupians,
We are a group of Arupians. We are passionate about Hong Kong and we are proud to call Hong Kong our home. In this connection,we would like to express our opinions and concerns to the recent events and protests.
The freedoms given under the Basic Law has always been one of the keystones to Hong Kong’s success, and through this open letter,we would like to seek for your support on the citizen-initiated strike on 5th August,in which, the people of Hong Kong are exercising these freedoms endowed under the Basic Law. We hope the strike will send a clear message to the Government and urge them to put forward a feasible solution in order to settle the current social crisis.
Since June, the proposed amendment to the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance has already led tens of thousands of citizens to protest on the street and express their opinion against the bill. Unfortunately, the Government chose to neglect the public opinion from the masses and the sparked further anger.
In recent protests,it is increasingly common to see intense confrontations between protestors and the police. The matter is made worse by the 21st July attacks in Yuen Long MTR Station, where the Police have failed to safeguard the safety of the public and also displayed an intentional selective enforcement. These actions all have detrimental impact on the rule of law.
Following the incident, civil servant groups including Administrative Officers and Information Officers have issued open letters expressing their discontent with the way that the Government has dealt with the incident. Furthermore, the public apology made by Chief Secretary for Administration Mr. Cheung Kin-chung has generated further unrest amongst the police force. This shows that the conflict is not limited between the public and the Government,it is also within the Government body.
With violent clashes happening every weekend,Hong Kong is in a deadlock. We do not want to see anyone’s future or even life to be ruined because of an unnecessary political conflict. We hope, through the citizen-initiated strike,to urge the Government listen to the public humbly, and put forward a proposal that would pave the way to true democracy in Hong Kong. This would also reconnect the Government with Hongkongers and secure a prosperous future for Hong Kong.
