This government calls us “rioters”. Today we have broken into the Legislative Council by force. We have backed up for years but at this moment, we have nowhere to go. How did we get here?
This government has relentlessly pushed bills and policies that serve to benefit the rich and extend the government’s power in expense of Hong Kong people's freedom and democracy: National Education, Article 23, unrepresentative Electoral Reform, trillion-dollar “white elephant” constructions, budget-cut on education and hospitals, Joint Immigration Controls, National Anthem Law, and now the Extradition Bill. They have jailed our peers and leaders for expressing our discontent and disqualified our lawfully elected representatives to take away our veto power in the Legco, right here on this floor. Our citizen rights and freedom suffer blow after blow, year after year. Today, we have nowhere to back up. We are already at the corner.
When one million people came out on 6/9 to call for the withdrawal of the Extradition Bill, the government responded with the plan to pass the bill in a rush. We had no choice but to come out to this very place to stop the passing on the bill on 6/12, because the current Legislative Council, instead of representing the people and bringing their concerns to the government, is reduced to a pro-government hand-counting machine. Instead of finally listening, the government sent the police to expel us with bean bag rounds, pepper spray, batons and tear-gases. On 6/16, two millions of people came out to demand the complete withdrawal of the notorious Extradition Bill and the release of protestors of 6/12, our demands fell on deaf ears again. Who really pushed the young people to risk years of jail time to come forth? The unresponsive government. We have backed up to the bottom line; we have nowhere to go.
We have exhausted all the other avenues and no one in the government responded. We are forced to come to this very place where our opposition of the Extradition Law should have brought forth months, weeks, and days ago: the Legislature Council. We can't count on anyone to represent us anymore; the government would only continue to be unresponsive and to put us in jail. We have come here to represent ourselves. Can you finally hear and respond?
The solution is simple. People will go away simply when our rights and freedom are restored:
1. Withdraw the Extradition Bill
2. Release arrested protestors
3. Remove the “riot” charges of protestors
4. Investigate police violence by an independent council
Government: You have the power to end this, now. This is on you, since the very beginning.
