An Open Letter to all World Leaders, Presidents, Ministers, delegates and attendees to the forth-coming G20 Summit to be held in Osaka, Japan, 28th - 29th June 2019 (the “G20 Summit”)
Dear Sirs,
Recent events in Hong Kong have grabbed the World’s attention. After massive demonstrations in Hong Kong, including two historic peaceful marches numbering between 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 people, the HK government announced that it would suspend enacting the proposed Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2019 (the “Extradition Bill”). Although the HK government has said that there is no timetable to re-introduce this suspended Bill, it has also refused to fully withdraw and retract the Bill. The Extradition Bill is the main reason why people took to the streets. Without further response from the government since suspending the Extradition Bill, the people of Hong Kong are wondering if all their efforts have come to nothing.
Since the handover of Hong Kong to China in 1997, Beijing and the HK government have repeatedly assured us that under the Basic Law of Hong Kong, her citizens are guaranteed basic rights and freedoms. These rights and freedoms have been eroding away, the Basic Law being continually re-interpreted, Beijing’s influences becoming more direct and obvious, and the Extradition Bill if passed into law will further curtail our freedom. The people of Hong Kong are fighting to keep these basic rights and freedoms. We are not demanding additional rights and privileges, only what is due.
We understand that the G20 Summit is an economic forum, and that the People’s Republic of China is one of the economic super powers in the World. We further appreciate that it may not be in everyone’s best economic interests to take up a fight with China at the G20 meeting. There is no intention to make Hong Kong the focus of the Summit, but we need to keep the flame alight. You are not asked to take up arms or fight our fight – something that may well fall into the Chinese labelling of “Foreign Forces and Influences” meddling with China’s affairs. All we ask is that every time you meet or come across any attendees and delegates from Hong Kong and China at the G20 Summit, to please simply “Ask After Hong Kong”. No need to engage, confront or ridicule; show that you care with a simple “How is Hong Kong?” will be more than sufficient. This is not a name and shame game. Officials from China, and everyone in China and the rest of the World, should be made aware of events happening in Hong Kong, events that need their care and attention. Asking After Hong Kong does just that.
Hong Kong has close to 8,000,000 people, literally a speck of dust in macro terms. The World did not focus its attention on HK the past weeks just because of the demonstrations. There lies beneath the universal desire for peace, freedom and democracy, which all citizens of the World aspire to and wish to uphold, as does Hong Kong.
