Papaya Rules 壽終正寢

Stella has decided: The "Papaya rules" will change, more support for Norris
- Driver management is becoming a significant challenge for McLaren, especially in terms of strategy. In the Dutch GP, to avoid causing problems for Norris, Piastri was not allowed to undercut Russell. This resulted in Piastri being passed by Leclerc and finishing behind him, due to Ferrari's clever strategy.
- Similarly in Monza, both drivers were put on the same strategy, with a late pit stop for Piastri, just 14 laps before the race's end, to avoid a potential issue that might put Norris behind Piastri.
- McLaren, aiming for the Constructors' Championship, now sees the possibility of competing for the Drivers' Championship as well due to Red Bull’s struggles.
"We must now recognize that not only the Constructors' championship is possible but also the drivers' championship, with the performance we have and some of the difficulties we see with Red Bull," said Andrea Stella, taking a tougher stance on team goals and rules of engagement.
- At Monza, McLaren’s cautious approach nearly backfired, as Norris was at risk of a Vettel-like incident in the first lap, which could have benefited Verstappen and Ferrari.
- Leclerc took advantage of McLaren's internal battle early in the race, pressuring Piastri during the first stint. A 1-2 for McLaren would have simplified their race management, but team orders became a more pressing issue.
"Before Monza, we were a bit cautious but now we can see that McLaren can compete on circuits where last year we were not competitive," said Stella, emphasizing the competitiveness of McLaren’s package, which could be a crucial asset for Norris in the championship race.
"We have a very competitive package and this could prove to be a very important weapon especially for Lando in the championship race."
- For the first time, Stella is clearly prioritizing Norris, hinting at changes to the "Papaya rules"—the engagement guidelines that will now support Norris more, given his 44-point lead over Piastri and a 62-point gap to Verstappen with eight races remaining.
- However, Norris will also need to raise his driving level, as he has only been definitively better than Piastri in one of the last four races. While Verstappen still deserves his position as the championship leader, McLaren has decided it is time to provide more support to their best-placed driver, putting him in the best psychological and competitive position possible.
