Excepting very specific and small targets, public boycotts rarely work. They just don't. You should have heard all the howls for boycotts from Canadians when Trump declared Canada a national security threat. People all over the comments swearing off travel to the US, buying US made products, etc.. Made no noticeable difference to the trade stats. None. If sales are down, drop the price a couple percent and they're back up again. Just the way it is.
What works is government boycotts: tariffs, trade regulations, that sort of thing. The things that China keeps doing to Canada. Those work. Yes, demand that MTR is excluded. Demand that all Chinese investment be blocked on national security grounds. No Huawei 5G. And, the hard one, demand that Chinese students be denied visas. Shaming governments into reacting works.
