ASMedia to finish tape-outs for PCIe 4.0 chip solutions by end-2019

Taiwan's ASMedia Technology is expected to complete tape-outs for PCIe 4.0 interface chip solutions by the end of 2019, seeking to strive for more contract design orders from AMD in 2020, when the US chipmaker's chipsets enter the PCIe 4.0 era, according to industry sources.

ASMedia has landed orders for AMD's B550 and A520 chipsets that support PCIe 3.0 and will kick off shipments to motherboard ODMs and OEMs in the fourth quarter of 2019. The company is expected to be able to win orders for PCIe 4.0-based chipsets from AMD in 2020 after the tape-outs are smoothly done, the sources said.

This is despite the fact that ASMedia has not won contract design orders from AMD for 7nm Ryzen 3rd generation processors and X570 motherboard chipsets that support PCIe 4.0 set to hit the market in July, the sources continued.

At a recent shareholders meeting, ASMedia chairman Jerry Shen said his company will step up the development of next-generation PCIe chip products and offer complete USB solutions covering 5G, 10G, and 20G, in addition to developing more applications for its SATA controller chips.
Shen said that ASMedia will also roll out USB 4.0 controller ICs in 2020 and expects to land orders from major PC and motherboard makers.

Industry sources said that ASMedia has reportedly tapped into the supply chains of Samsung Electronics and SanDisk with its USB bridge controller chips that can support transmission speed of 10Gbs for HDD and SSD adopting PCIe interface.

ASMedia has also ventured its redriver chips into the market for high-speed transmission chips while also ramping up shipments of high-end SATA interface controller chips to vendors of industrial safety and embedded systems

The company has reported consolidated revenues of NT$1.539 billion (US$48.84 million) for the first five months of 2019, up 30.6% on year.
